COVID-19 Mental Health – South Edmonton

There’s no other way to put it: these are tough times. And very different times. None of us have experienced a global pandemic in our lifetime and it’s completely normal to feel the full gamut of emotions that can change daily, even hourly. Even as things slowly start going ‘back’ to a new normal, our mental health has been impacted in ways we don’t realize.

What are the common reactions people have had to the pandemic?

We’re still trying to figure out what all the reactions are since this is such an unprecedented time. But we’re finding that the most common reactions are:

  • Fear. Fear of catching the virus. Fear of missing out on the life you could/should have been living in the virus wasn’t around. Fear of the unknown and the future.
  • Strained relationships. Not only with the people, you live with but also with the ones you can’t visit.
  • Stress and anxiety. Most commonly about work, childcare, learning new technologies, and finances.
  • Loneliness. Due to our lack of socialization, in-person contact (Zoom calls just aren’t the same), and recreation activities we aren’t taking part in.
  • Different levels of motivation. Some people have experienced a total lack of motivation, while others have gone to the depths of reorganization and deep cleaning. And some experience both depending on the day.
  • Anger, confusion, mistrust, and grief. With all the uncertainty of the future, we’ve experienced all sorts of reactions to it. Good and bad.

All of these reactions are completely normal. If you’ve experienced any one of them, know that you’re not alone. Just about everyone is going through something.

Is there anything I can do for myself at home?

Exercising and eating well is a good place to start, but we understand those are easier said than done. Above everything, we recommend practicing self-compassion – being kind to yourself and not giving yourself a hard time about the way you’re feeling.

Also, make a point of reaching out for support either virtually or in safe ways that you’re comfortable with. This is especially important if you’re feeling the impacts of loneliness that isolation has had.

You can also subscribe to Text4Hope. It’s a free daily text messaging system put together by the Government of Alberta that provides evidence-based tips for dealing with stress and isolation.

How can a psychologist help?

Just like with other issues, our therapists believe that addressing our feelings now is really important. Suppressing and pushing aside emotions will only lead to more intense long-term effects. If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed don’t feel like you can manage your feelings anymore, please come see us.

Our main focus at Boost Psychology is to promote wellbeing and mental health in a comfortable environment. Our highly qualified therapists are here to help you talk through your reactions and figure out ways you can cope with them in a healthy way that resonates with you.

One of the most common ways we can help is by guiding you through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It provides you with the skills to deal with the issues you’re struggling with. The premise of CBT is that the way we think influences our emotions and behaviors. If we change our thoughts, we can change the way we feel and behave.

Why Boost Psychology?

Right now, we’re offering virtual and in-person sessions, based on everyone’s comfort level. We take security and confidentiality very seriously at the best of times, so rest assured that we treat our virtual sessions the same way. If you choose an in-person session, know that we’re taking every precaution to keep it safe and sanitized between every visit.

Our office is staffed with highly qualified therapists who can help with a variety of issues.
Boost Psychology provides treatments for a variety of issues, including stress and burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, grief, couples counseling, addictions, and life transitions.
