Low Cost Therapy - South Edmonton Boost Psychology - Therapy Room

Boost Psychology has started an internship program to address this barrier for access in our community. We are pleased to bring on an intern therapist to provide our lower-cost services. An intern therapist is a person who is completing a master’s degree in counselling or psychology. At this point in their educational career, they have completed all the theoretical coursework and are ready to apply the skills they have learned in real-life situations. As part of their graduate program, they are required to complete a certain number of counselling sessions while under supervision. Our intern therapists are supervised by a registered psychologist who oversees all aspects of their work. Their supervision includes reviewing files, watching recorded counselling sessions, discussing treatment planning, and interventions for the client.

Our intern therapists work with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, burnout, relationship issues, and grief. They work with individuals and couples from all backgrounds. The most frequent modalities they use are evidence-based and include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy (SFT), and person-centered techniques. Individual intern therapists may have interests in different areas and or theories. Check out their biography on our About page for more information. Please contact our office today to schedule an appointment with our intern therapist. They can be booked through phone, email, text, or online.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a registered psychologist and an intern therapist?

A registered psychologist is someone who has completed at minimum a master’s degree in psychology or counselling and has done 1-2 years of post-masters licensing including a licensing exam, supervised practice, and an ethics examination. Intern therapists are at the end of their master’s degree and are completing supervised practice. Once they have completed their schooling, they can then move into the licensing process with the College of Alberta Psychologists, which takes another 1-2 years to complete.

What kinds of issues can an intern therapist help me with? What can they not do?Low Cost Therapy - South Edmonton Boost Psychology - Tea

Intern therapists provide general counselling under the supervision of a registered psychologist. They work with issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship issues, stress, and general wellness counselling.

Intern therapists cannot fill out paperwork for employers or insurance companies. Their services are not covered by benefits.

How long can I see the intern therapist?

The intern therapists stay with our clinic for a six-month term. If you are needing services after their term, they will find you an appropriate therapist, or transfer you over to another intern therapist.

What will my first session look like?

First sessions are a time for the intern therapist to gather information about you and your symptoms. This information is gathered to best compile a treatment plan for you, to make your time and investment into your mental health most effective. Follow up sessions look more like “traditional” therapy you would see on TV, where you are actively working on problems and “boosting” yourself up.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a 50-minute session with an intern therapist is $35. The recommended fee schedule for psychologists in Alberta is $220 per 50-minute session. Please note, these fees are not covered by insurance.
