There are two broad types of assessment: formal and informal assessments. Registered Psychologists are healthcare professionals qualified and designated with the permission to administer, interpret, and score formal assessments. When you think of “getting an IQ test,” you are thinking about doing something that only a psychologist can provide. To do this, you will be required to sit down with your psychologist for several hours of testing using norm-referenced, standardized tests in conjunction with a clinical interview. The main purpose of a formal assessment is information gathering, as these interviews are not treatment-based. Informal assessment is often used by treatment-focused psychologists to measure symptom severity and treatment progress. Formal assessments are far more comprehensive.
It is important to remember that not everyone who seeks treatment for their mental health requires a formal assessment. Our registered psychologists who specialize in assessment are trained to gather large amounts of information, analyze that information, and put it into a report that outlines the issues. They can provide a diagnosis if applicable and recommendations for treatment of that concern. After the assessment is complete and the report written, your psychologist will meet with you and go over the findings.
How do I book an assessment, and how much does it cost?
Please contact our office to set up a consultation. Fees are dependent on the type of assessment needed, and the amount of time it takes to complete.
Here are the assessments our clinic is offering:
- Psychoeducational Assessment – Psycho-educational assessments are offered for students in primary and secondary school, as well as university students. These assessments typically involve a standardized assessment of academic and intellectual abilities.
- Diagnostic Assessment – Mental health assessments are offered to formally screen for issues such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, PTSD, and other mental health disorders from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR). When deciding what to assess, an assessment question will be formulated, and the types of tests administered will be designed to answer that question.
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment – This diagnostic assessment is for people who may be on the autism spectrum and includes evaluation using standardized measures, clinical interviews, and developmental information.
- Adult ADHD Assessment – An ADHD assessment can help to see if you meet the diagnostic criteria and provide suggestions to help you improve functioning and manage your symptoms.
Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for an assessment?
Assessments are broadly available for all ages and can be discussed in further detail with your psychologist. In terms of youth, we offer psychoeducational assessments for clients who are in school (both children/youth as well as university students) to assess potential areas of weakness and build an understanding of your child’s learning style.
Adults are also eligible for assessments, and the most common ones given to adults are for ADHD, autism, and assessments regarding injuries.
What will an assessment help determine?
An assessment is helpful in determining the etiology or the cause of certain problematic symptoms. In undergoing a formal assessment, the tests administered allow your psychologist the ability to determine the correct diagnosis and subsequent treatment options available that best suit your needs and mental health disorder.
I think I have ADHD – what kind of assessments are there for that?
If you are looking for an assessment for a child or adolescent who is showing signs of ADHD, there are multiple assessments that can be utilized, such as psychoeducational assessments and MATCH assessments. For adults, a diagnosis of ADHD can sometimes be missed, but there are assessments that can be used if any symptoms are starting to arise. These assessments can include the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, WEISS symptom record, and the WEISS functional impairment rating scale.
