Self-Care and Self-Compassion – South Edmonton

Self-care has become a huge buzzword in the last couple of years. Why the buzz? Is it just a fad? We think it’s here to stay—and for good reason!

A lot of people associate self-care with things like spa days, Netflix binges or wine nights. Those are all great, but they’re not actually self-care.

What is self-care?

Self-care is deliberately taking care of our wellbeing through restorative activities. It’s a practice people use to create healthy relationships with themselves and others. It can be through little or big acts, but it’s always something that refuels us and leaves us feeling revitalized.

Let’s try something: Plant your feet firmly on the ground and put your hands on your lap. Close your eyes. Be mindful of how your feet feel on the ground and the connection between your lap and hands. Now take five deep breathes.

You just did a form of self-care!

Why is self-care important?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “you can’t fill someone else’s cup if yours is empty?” Self-care doesn’t just help you be there for others in a more present and mindful way. It also helps you fill your own cup so that you can be there for yourself.

With self-care as part of your everyday mindset, you’re able to better navigate stress and anxiety, and reduce your chances of burnout and strained relationships.

Why should I see a therapist for self-care? Can’t I do it myself?

Self-care is a simple concept in theory, but something people often struggle with. Everyone likes different things, at different thresholds. What revitalizes one person might drain someone else.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to practicing self-care. Our therapists will work with you to uncover what works best for you. Be prepared to learn a lot about yourself, in a good way!

What types of things will I learn in these therapy sessions?

Our main focus at Boost Psychology is to promote wellbeing and mental health in a comfortable environment. What is focused on is determined by your personal needs and situation, but on of the most common things we guide people though is setting boundaries and learning self-compassion. Learning these skills are applicable whether you are working through depression, anxiety, trauma, or just on their own. Setting boundaries and self-compassion are things we can do to take care of ourselves and promote our own wellness.

What is self-compassion?

Self-compassion is about being a good friend to ourselves, especially when we need it most. It’s a seemingly easy concept, but a lot more difficult than we realize. Do you treat yourself with the same kindness and care when you’re suffering as you would a friend?

Think about the last time a friend you care about was struggling and came to you about it. What did you say to them? How did you say it? What tone did you use?

Now think about a time when you failed at something. What do you say to yourself? How do you say it? What tone do you use?

Why is self-compassion important for my self-care journey?

Self-compassion is a really powerful way of improving your wellbeing, making it a great tool for your self-care journey. Unfortunately, society has hard wired us into being critical and judgemental of ourselves so much so, that it’s engrained into our subconscious. Self-talk, whether positive or negative, affect our emotions, beliefs, motivation and self-image. When up to 80% of our self-talk is negative, you can imagine how much that affects our lives.

During your self-care journey, our therapists will help guide you to being kinder with yourself. Undoing all of that negative wiring isn’t a quick process, and you’ll probably find that you don’t believe your positive self-talk at first. But just like anything, practicing positive self-talk will help it come more naturally, more often.

Our office is staffed with highly qualified therapists who can help with a variety of issues.

In addition to self-care, self-compassion and boundaries, Boost Psychology provides treatments for a variety of issues, including stress and burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, grief, couples counselling, addictions, and life transitions.

Our therapists have training in various evidence-based modalities.  We have created a comfortable space for you to come and give time to yourself. You will work together with your psychologist to create a treatment plan that fits your needs.

Give our office a call today to discuss your options and work toward creating a healthier you.
