Effective Treatment for Depression

Depression treatment is a key focus of our practice, as it’s one of the most common mental health concerns people seek help for. While there are many ways to approach depression, we prioritize evidence-based treatments; approaches supported by research for their effectiveness. This gives you the best chance of improving your mental health and getting back to feeling like yourself.

Supportive and Accepting Counsellors

Boost Psychology was founded with the goal to provide a warm and welcoming environment where our clients can feel comfortable and accepted. We care about our clients and their mental health. You can feel the difference when you come to our clinic. We believe that when people feel supported, they’re more empowered to take meaningful steps toward improving their depression and creating positive change in their lives.

Depression Counselling – First Steps

If you think you may be experiencing depression, the first step is to reach out and schedule an initial appointment. You can visit our about page to learn more about each psychologist and their approach to treatment. If you already have someone in mind who feels like a good fit, feel free to book directly with them online or by calling our office. If you’re unsure and would like help choosing the right psychologist, our friendly administrative team is happy to assist you.

Your First Counselling Appointment

When you arrive for your first session, you’ll be asked to complete a few forms. Once that’s done, your psychologist will greet you in the waiting area and bring you to their office to help you get settled.

The session typically begins with your psychologist inviting you to share what you’ve been experiencing and how you’ve been feeling. This is your opportunity to talk openly and provide any information that feels important. As you speak, your psychologist will listen carefully, take notes, and ask thoughtful questions to better understand your situation.

Within the first session or two, your psychologist will share their initial impressions about what may be contributing to your depression symptoms and will discuss a treatment approach tailored to your needs. You’re also encouraged to ask any questions you may have; this time is meant for you.

It’s completely normal to feel a bit tired afterward; however, many people find that even just talking about what they’re going through brings a sense of relief.

After the first session, your follow-up sessions will focus on treatment of depression symptoms, and you will likely be given exercises to complete at home. The length of treatment depends on your personal situation as everyone is different. Your psychologist will create a depression treatment plan that’s tailored specifically for you.

Symptoms of Depression

Common symptoms of depression include low mood, feeling guilty or worthless, little or no interest in activities that were once enjoyed, changes in weight or appetite, sleep disturbances: either sleeping more or sleeping less, low energy, fatigue, thoughts of suicide or death, poor concentration, and trouble making decisions. Depending on the type of depression, these episodes can last from weeks to several years.

It’s important to know that in most cases depression can be managed and treated.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if I have depression?

You can likely ‘feel’ if you have depression. We all have bad days and that is normal. Depression is different. It feels like having a really bad day, over and over for at least two weeks. The most common symptoms are feelings of sadness, fatigue, hopelessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawing from others, and losing interest in things you used to enjoy. Your psychologist will assess your symptoms and provide a diagnosis if applicable.

How long does treatment take?

Your psychologist will work with you to create an individual treatment plan based on what is going on and your symptoms. Generally speaking, treatment for depression can take as little as three sessions or as many as fifteen or more. You will likely be recommended to meet with your psychologist every week or every other week. Treatment for depression varies for everyone. When you meet with your psychologist, they can provide you with a treatment estimate based on your individual needs.

Which treatment will be given?

There are several effective ways to treat depression. Your psychologist will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your symptoms and how you present in sessions. As mental health experts, they’ll draw on proven approaches while also inviting your input to ensure the plan feels like a good fit for you.
